Know exactly what YOU should do to stay safe in Mumbai — based on your personal experience level and travel style.

Summary

The main tourist area with Gateway of India, international restaurants, and markets. Police presence and English speakers make it easier, though you'll pay tourist prices and deal with crowded streets.

Details

Colaba is where tourists go - Gateway of India, Taj hotel, Leopold Café. Streets stay busy until around 11 PM with tourists and vendors, which means more eyes around but also more people trying to sell you things. Shopkeepers speak English because they deal with foreigners constantly. Colaba Causeway market gets packed during the day. Keep your bag in front of you and expect pickpockets. After dark, stay on main streets like Colaba Causeway rather than side lanes. Police show up around the landmarks regularly. Eating alone at cafes is normal here since half the people are tourists. It's one of the safer Mumbai neighborhoods, especially for first-timers who need that comfort level. You'll pay for it though - everything costs more than local areas.
