Penestanan and Campuhan work for a quiet stay close to nature, with a busy wellness scene. Poor lighting and limited transport after dark are the trade-off.
Penestanan is a village on the western edge of Ubud, with rice fields, small guesthouses and yoga studios, and it attracts a lot of longer-stay visitors. Campuhan, next door, is where the Campuhan Ridge Walk starts, and it has several restaurants with valley views. Expect a calm area with plant-based cafes, yoga and meditation classes and other solo travelers. The downside is isolation after dark: lanes are narrow and often unlit, dogs roam, and walking between the village and the centre means stairs and dark stretches. Arrange evening transport in advance and stay off the ridge walk and rice-field paths once the light fades.

Peliatan and Pengosekan have cafes, galleries and yoga in a village setting. They suit people who want a settled routine and are fine arranging rides at night.
Nyuh Kuning is a village base with local warungs and craft workshops. It suits people who like quiet evenings and do not mind arranging rides for nights out.
Central Ubud has the most attractions, restaurants and services within walking distance, which makes it the most convenient base for a first visit. In return you get crowds, traffic and constant sales offers.
