Eyre Square is Galway's transport hub, with shops and many places to stay. It is convenient by day and fine in the early evening, but noisy and rowdy late on weekend nights.
Eyre Square is the green space in the middle of the city centre, next to the bus and train stations, shopping centres and many hotels and hostels. That makes it the most practical base for a first visit. During the day it is full of families, students and workers on lunch breaks, and crossing it in daylight is no problem. In the evening, the square and the lower end of Shop Street fill with groups heading out, and late on weekend nights it gets noisy, with drunk crowds, queues at takeaways and some unwanted attention. Use the well-lit main routes, avoid side lanes after closing time, and take a taxi from the ranks around the square for the ride home. Daytime and early evening are calm, and the transport links make it a convenient place to arrive or leave from.

ExcellentAreas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
The Latin Quarter is where most of Galway's music, food and pubs are packed into a few pedestrian streets. It is busy and social, and generally fine for women alone, with the usual caution around closing time on weekends.
Woodquay and the cathedral area are residential and quiet, a short walk from the centre. They suit anyone wanting a calmer base, with care needed on riverside paths after dark.
The Claddagh and Spanish Arch area is Galway's waterfront, best for daytime and sunset walks. It is relaxed in daylight, but the quiet, poorly lit stretches need care after dark.
