Stazione Centrale & Bolognina

The station and Bolognina are practical for arriving and have some worthwhile cultural stops, but this is the least comfortable part of Bologna after dark. Take taxis late and stay in the center if you can.

North of the center, the area around Bologna Centrale and the Bolognina district is Bologna's transport hub and its most mixed neighborhood. Via dell'Indipendenza and Piazza XX Settembre near the station are busy by day with commuters and visitors, but after dark the station surroundings, underpasses and the nearby Montagnola park attract rough sleepers, occasional aggressive begging and pickpockets, and feel uncomfortable for anyone alone. Bolognina, beyond the tracks, is a mix of residential blocks, the Mercato Albani, the Cineteca di Bologna, the MAMbo contemporary art museum and a growing number of cafes and natural-wine bars. It is mostly fine by day and in the early evening, but has fewer tourists, more empty streets and less lighting than the center. It is practical for arrival and cheaper lodging, but most people will be more comfortable staying in the center.
