The main tourist zone - Duomo cathedral, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping arcade, La Scala opera house, fashion district. Constant crowds, police everywhere, well-lit streets. Everything is expensive. English widely spoken. The safety issue here is pickpockets and scams, not violent crime. Watch for the friendship bracelet scam near the Duomo (they tie it on your wrist then demand money) and petition scams. Keep your phone and wallet secure in crowds. Busy dawn to midnight. Convenient if you want major sights within walking distance, but you'll pay tourist prices for everything.

Where the nightlife is. Canals, bars, restaurants, crowds until 2am on weekends. Social and safe when busy, but the party scene isn't for everyone.
The art district with museums, galleries, and cafes. Safer than most areas but more expensive. Good if you want culture and don't mind paying for it.
Between center and Navigli. More local, cheaper restaurants, vintage shops. Good value if you want proximity to both areas without tourist prices.
