Naples, Italy
Someone grabs your arm. A taxi goes off-route. A guy won't leave you alone. This free guide covers what to say and do.
Centro Storico is the historic heart of Naples with great food and street life. Worth visiting for the experience, but requires awareness especially after dark. Go during the day for pizza and sights, then head to safer areas for evening.
The Centro Storico is Naples' historic center - narrow streets laid out on ancient Greek roads. Spaccanapoli is the straight street that cuts through it, lined with churches, street vendors selling fried pizza, and laundry hanging from balconies. During the day it's crowded and chaotic - tour groups, street musicians, university students, old men arguing about football outside cafes. Via dei Tribunali and Spaccanapoli have some of the city's best pizza at Di Matteo and Sorbillo. Solo diners are common - people eating alone, working on laptops. The atmosphere is loud and very Neapolitan. After dark the vibe changes. Around 7-8 PM tourist crowds thin out, shops close, and the narrow streets are poorly lit. Pickpocketing happens even during the day - keep your phone in inside pockets, bags zipped and in front. Scooters don't stop for pedestrians. Main streets like Via Toledo stay busy until midnight, but side alleys empty out. You won't necessarily have problems, but stay alert.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
The Spanish Quarter is the grittiest, most local part of Naples with good cheap street food. It's been improving but still has safety concerns at night. Go during the day, then leave.
Piazza Bellini is the student nightlife area with cheap drinks and an international crowd. Welcoming for solo travelers, but stick to the well-lit square itself.
Chiaia is the upscale waterfront area with designer shopping and good safety. More expensive and less authentically Neapolitan, but a comfortable base if that's your priority.
