Naples, Italy
Someone grabs your arm. A taxi goes off-route. A guy won't leave you alone. This free guide covers what to say and do.
Chiaia is the upscale waterfront area with designer shopping and good safety. More expensive and less authentically Neapolitan, but a comfortable base if that's your priority.
Chiaia is Naples' upscale waterfront district. It feels different from the chaotic historic center - tree-lined streets, designer shops along Via Chiaia, restaurants with English menus. This is where wealthier Neapolitans live, plus expats and tourists who want a quieter base. The 'barretti di Chiaia' area around Via Giuseppe Fiorelli and Via Bisignano has cocktail bars that fill up at night with well-dressed locals in their twenties and thirties. Solo dining is common - you'll see people reading at waterfront cafes. The Lungomare promenade stays busy with walkers until late evening. Good police presence, better street lighting than other areas, and you can walk at night without much concern. It's more expensive and less characteristically Neapolitan, but safer.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Vomero is the residential hilltop neighborhood with good restaurants and a calm atmosphere. Safe and local, but you'll need the funicular to reach tourist sites.
Posillipo is the wealthy hilltop coastal area with good views but far from everything. Very safe, quiet, and expensive. More like a day trip destination than a place to stay.
Piazza Bellini is the student nightlife area with cheap drinks and an international crowd. Welcoming for solo travelers, but stick to the well-lit square itself.
