Most of a trip to Taormina happens here. It's safe, easy to get around, and comfortable for women traveling alone. Prices are high because of tourist demand, but the food and the evening atmosphere on the corso are decent value for that.
Centro Storico is the whole historic town, an 800-meter stretch of Corso Umberto I running between two medieval gates. Restored medieval and baroque buildings in honey-colored stone line the street, and side alleys open onto terraces over the Ionian Sea. Piazza IX Aprile, about halfway along, is the town's main gathering spot: a wide terrace with a balustrade over Naxos Bay, next to the clock tower and the facade of Sant'Agostino. The Greek Theatre is a short uphill walk away. You'll spend most of your time here. The street is busy through the day and into late evening, it's well lit, and it's set up for international visitors, so women eating, shopping, or walking alone don't stand out. The mood is polished rather than rowdy. Bam Bar, open since 1947, is known for granita con brioche and there's usually a line in the morning. In the evening the passeggiata fills the corso with people strolling.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Mazzaro and Isola Bella are the best beach options reachable from Taormina, with decent facilities and an organized, safe setup. Go for the day and return to the hilltop in the evening, because the area is much quieter once beach hours end.
This is the quiet, upscale end of Taormina, with grand hotels and a lot of literary and artistic history. It works well for anyone who wants to stay near the best hotels and restaurants, or see the Greek Theatre at a calmer pace than the corso allows. It isn't cheap.
Castelmola is a worthwhile half-day trip for anyone willing to make the extra effort. The views are better than those from Taormina itself, and it feels much less touristy than the corso. Treat it as a daytime destination and get back to Taormina before dark.
