Mazzaro and Isola Bella are the best beach options reachable from Taormina, with decent facilities and an organized, safe setup. Go for the day and return to the hilltop in the evening, because the area is much quieter once beach hours end.
Down at sea level beneath the cliffs, Mazzaro and Isola Bella are Taormina's beach area, and they feel nothing like the hilltop town. You get there by cable car or bus. Mazzaro is a small pebble bay with beach clubs (lidi), seafood restaurants, and a few five-star hotels right on the water. Isola Bella, 300 meters south, is a pebble beach in front of a small wooded islet joined to the shore by a narrow sandbar, and it's a designated nature reserve. The water is very clear and the view back up to the town on the cliff is worth the trip. Beach club staff are around all day and the bay is small, so you're never far from other people, and swimming or sunbathing alone is normal. The main problems are bags stolen from unattended towels and overpriced vendors, not violent crime. The area empties out around sunset when the clubs close, so plan to head back up to town for the evening. In July and August the beach gets very crowded and club prices go up; September is a better month for it.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
This is the quiet, upscale end of Taormina, with grand hotels and a lot of literary and artistic history. It works well for anyone who wants to stay near the best hotels and restaurants, or see the Greek Theatre at a calmer pace than the corso allows. It isn't cheap.
Most of a trip to Taormina happens here. It's safe, easy to get around, and comfortable for women traveling alone. Prices are high because of tourist demand, but the food and the evening atmosphere on the corso are decent value for that.
Castelmola is a worthwhile half-day trip for anyone willing to make the extra effort. The views are better than those from Taormina itself, and it feels much less touristy than the corso. Treat it as a daytime destination and get back to Taormina before dark.
