Don't Make These 5 Mistakes in Kingston

What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Kingston.

Details

Downtown has the National Gallery, Kingston Craft Market, and the Victoria Pier waterfront development. During business hours it's full of government workers, vendors, and people doing daily business. The waterfront area around Victoria Pier has restaurants like Gloria's and Ocean 7 rooftop bar with harbor views - part of efforts to revitalize downtown. But the reality is downtown has serious safety problems. The U.S. State Department warns against visiting, and several neighborhoods here (Tivoli Gardens, Trench Town, Denham Town) rank among Jamaica's most dangerous with high violent crime. If you want to see the National Gallery or Craft Market, go on an organized tour with a local guide during business hours, then leave before late afternoon. The waterfront transformation is happening slowly, but downtown still needs extreme caution. Don't explore on your own, don't go at night, don't display valuables.
