Kingston, Jamaica
The main transport and commercial hub with authentic local atmosphere and lots of street food. Safe during daylight but crowded and chaotic - watch your belongings and leave before evening.
Named after a massive cotton tree that used to mark the halfway point between the mountains and sea, Half Way Tree is where buses, taxis, and people from all over Kingston converge. The transport hub and commercial center gets packed during the day with office workers grabbing lunch from street vendors, students, and locals shopping. Street food sellers are everywhere offering fried dumplings, soup, porridge, and fresh fruit for cheap - this is local food, not tourist food. The area around Mandela Park and the bus terminal gets very crowded during rush hours, so watch your belongings. You'll hear more Patois here than English. It feels chaotic and can be overwhelming if you're not used to busy Caribbean market atmospheres, but it's generally safe during daylight. After dark the area empties fast and isn't safe. Come during the day for authentic food and culture, then get back to New Kingston before evening.
