Summary

Major train station with office buildings, food halls, and nightlife districts. Fine during the day. Kabukicho touts are annoying at night - stay on main streets or skip it.

Details

Shinjuku is a huge train station surrounded by office towers on one side and entertainment chaos on the other - tiny bar alleys like Golden Gai, then Kabukicho red-light district. The west side empties out after 8 PM when office workers leave. The east side runs all night. Kabukicho at night means aggressive touts trying to pull you into overpriced clubs and bars. Stay on main streets and you're mostly fine. The station is notoriously confusing with 200+ exits, but Google Maps works. Shinjuku Gyoen garden gives you a break from the noise. Food goes from yakitori standing bars in Omoide Yokocho to department store restaurants. English is around because it's a transit hub, but the scale overwhelms people at first.
