Rainbow Street is the main tourist area with cafes, bookshops, and restaurants. English is widely spoken, people eat alone without anyone caring, and it feels safe to walk around. Good base if you want both safety and access to Amman's cultural stuff.

Details

Rainbow Street is where most tourists end up. The street runs through Jabal Amman, one of the city's original seven hills, and has the highest concentration of cafes, bookshops, and galleries you'll find in the city. It's well-lit and stays busy into the evening, especially on weekends when families and young people walk between restaurants and shops. You'll see plenty of people dining alone at places like Books@Cafe. Most staff speak English. Prices are higher than downtown but not outrageous by Western standards. The area has a bohemian feel - mix of locals, expats, and tourists. Wild Jordan Center is here, and you can walk to other neighborhoods pretty easily despite the hills.
