Mombasa, Kenya
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Mombasa.
Nice beaches on the South Coast, but isolated and the ferry access is a pain. Best for pure beach holidays if you're okay with limited options.
Diani Beach is 36km south of Mombasa across the Likoni Ferry. The beaches are nice - white sand, clear water - but getting there is a hassle. You can take the Likoni Ferry (free but crowded, pickpockets work the rush hours, unsafe at night) or drive the long way around. The South Coast is more isolated than the North Coast. Resorts are spread out, beaches less developed. That means quieter and less touristy, but also fewer options for food and activities. Once you're at Diani, beach areas near resorts are safe during the day with hotel security. Good for swimming and water sports. English works at tourist places. Solo dining is fine at resort restaurants, but there aren't many choices compared to Nyali or Bamburi. The real issue is isolation - you're stuck at your resort unless you arrange transport. Some hotels are remote enough that you can't just walk out. Nice beaches and quiet, but limited access to variety. Works if you want a pure beach holiday and don't need city amenities.
