Don't Make These 5 Mistakes in Mombasa

What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Mombasa.

Summary

Historic area with Swahili architecture and culture, but unsafe after dark. Daytime visits only (9am-4pm), preferably with a guide. Don't stay here.

Details

Old Town has the historic architecture - colonial buildings, narrow streets with carved balconies, Fort Jesus. During the day, especially morning to early afternoon, it's busy with tour groups and families. Tourist Police hang around Fort Jesus and can help with basic directions in English. You'll find Swahili restaurants and cafes with fresh seafood here. But timing matters. After sunset around 6pm, vendors pack up fast, tour groups leave, and those charming narrow streets get dark and empty. Crime goes up at night - robberies, street crime. Even locals from other areas avoid it after dark. Come during daylight (9am-4pm), ideally with a guide, and leave before sunset. Dress modestly - cover shoulders and knees. Take an Uber out when you're done.
