Details

That Luang area has Laos' most important monument - the golden stupa of Pha That Luang, which is on the national currency. It's 4 kilometers northeast of the center and less crowded than downtown. The golden stupa is surrounded by gardens and cloisters with Khmer artifacts. Two working temples are here, including Wat That Luang Neua where the supreme patriarch of Lao Buddhism lives. Monks in saffron robes, locals praying and making offerings. A statue of King Setthathirath (who built it in the 16th century) stands in the gardens. This is for sightseeing, not staying - a few small restaurants near the entrance. Most people come for a few hours, taking tuk-tuks from the center for about 60,000 kip ($3). Cover shoulders and knees since it's an active religious site. Early morning is good for watching alms collection and seeing the stupa at sunrise.
