Vientiane, Laos
Riverside area with temple, bars, and restaurants. Safe during day and early evening, avoid the riverbank after 10pm.
Watchan sits along the Mekong River with Wat Chan temple and its old carvings nearby. Sunsets over the river from rooftop bars are nice, and Chao Anouvong Park has green space. Riverside restaurants sell spring rolls and grilled fish. Early evening brings locals and tourists to outdoor cafes with river views. Bars and restaurants stay open until the 11:30pm curfew. It's less backpacker-focused than Ban Anou, less formal than the embassy area. English works at most riverside places. Walking feels safe during the day and early evening, but skip the riverbank paths after 10pm when lighting gets sparse and foot traffic drops.
