Old Town is the most convenient area for first-time visitors. It has the concentration of restaurants, cafes, and sights, plus everyone speaks English and there's visible police presence. Watch for pickpockets in crowded tourist spots.
The old town is where most tourists stay and spend their time. Cobblestone streets, medieval buildings, Gothic churches, and merchant houses make up this UNESCO site. During the day there's constant foot traffic from tour groups, and you'll see both regular police and English-speaking Tourist Police around the major attractions. Pickpocketing happens in crowded areas - keep your bag zipped and phone secured. Cafes and restaurants are used to single diners, so eating alone with a book or laptop is normal. Summer brings outdoor terraces and street performers, winter has Christmas markets. The area stays active late with restaurants and bars, but stick to main streets after midnight. Everyone speaks English since they cater to international visitors.

This area works well if you want to see the architecture and prefer quieter surroundings than Old Town. Good cafes, safe walking environment, but limited nightlife. It's a residential area, not a tourist zone.
A residential area across the river with wooden architecture and a local feel. Safe and increasingly popular with creative types. Weekend markets and independent cafes. Works if you want to see local life beyond the tourist center.
Nature-focused residential area with forest park and lake. Very safe but very quiet with almost no restaurants or cafes. Better as a day trip than a base unless you want to commute to the center for meals and activities.
