Modern waterfront area with hawker food, sunset views, and shopping malls. Safe and clean with good infrastructure, though pricier and less character than George Town. Family-oriented evening atmosphere.
Penang's waterfront area with modern condos, shopping malls (Gurney Plaza, Gurney Paragon), and a seafront promenade. Quiet during the day, picks up around 5pm when Gurney Drive Hawker Centre opens and people come to eat char kway teow while the sun sets over the strait. Family-oriented atmosphere, decent lighting along the waterfront. You'll see local women jogging or walking alone in the evenings. Gurney Walk has newer cafes and boutique shops. Everything costs more than the heritage area but it's cleaner and more modern. Hawker stalls close around 11pm. The expensive condos and hotels mean private security guards are around.

Quiet residential coastal area between George Town and Batu Ferringhi. Safe with local restaurants and calm atmosphere. Limited tourist stuff and nightlife. Good for seeing how locals live but you'll need transport to reach actual attractions.
The UNESCO heritage zone is Penang's main tourist area with street art, hawker food, and colonial architecture. Generally safe during day and evening hours, plenty of cafes and eating options. Gets touristy but you can find authentic spots if you wander off the main drags.
Beach resort strip with night market and water activities. Safe enough on the main tourist drag but pricier and less authentic than George Town. Better as a day trip than a base - limited budget accommodation.
