Quiet during the day, picks up around 5pm when Gurney Drive Hawker Centre opens and people come to eat char kway teow while the sun sets over the strait. Family-oriented atmosphere, decent lighting along the waterfront. You'll see local women jogging or walking alone in the evenings. Gurney Walk has newer cafes and boutique shops. Everything costs more than the heritage area but it's cleaner and more modern. Hawker stalls close around 11pm. The expensive condos and hotels mean private security guards are around.

Beach resort strip with night market and water activities. Safe enough on the main tourist drag but pricier and less authentic than George Town. Better as a day trip than a base - limited budget accommodation.
