What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in George Town.

Details

Centered on Lebuh Pasar (Market Street) - spice shops, incense, Bollywood music, sari stores. Penang's Indian community has been here for generations so it's authentic rather than tourist-manufactured. Smells like jasmine, curry spices, and temple incense. Shops sell steel cookware, gold jewelry, and restaurants do proper South Indian dosas and banana leaf rice. The 24-hour mamak stalls work for solo dining since locals eat alone there regularly. Safe during daytime when families are shopping and workers grabbing lunch. Empties out after 9pm when shops close, and lighting isn't as good as the main heritage zone. More conservative than touristy George Town - cover shoulders and knees or expect stares. Shorts and tank tops will get you more attention than elsewhere.
