Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Street markets and cheap food in what's left of old KL. Come during the day for authentic chaos and hawker stalls, but clear out before dark. Budget hostels available, but pickpocketing is common.
Cramped streets packed with market stalls selling knockoff bags, traditional medicine, and hawker food - this is what's left of old Kuala Lumpur. Petaling Street gets absolutely jammed during market hours, which makes for good people-watching and easy pickpocketing. Vendors shout prices, satay smoke mixes with temple incense, and the chaos feels more authentic than modern KL. Come during busy afternoon and early evening hours when families shop and Tourist Police are around. After 9pm the crowds disappear and the poorly lit side streets feel sketchy. Budget hostels here offer female dorms, attracting backpackers who trade comfort for cheap beds near street food. English is less common than in Bukit Bintang or KLCC, but pointing works for shopping and eating. KL Sentral is a 10-minute walk when you need to escape to nicer areas. Treat this as a daytime stop for cheap food and markets, not somewhere to hang out at night.

Little India with cheap vegetarian food and budget accommodation near KL Sentral station. Safe during the day, dead at night. Good for culture and transport access, but go elsewhere for nightlife.
The cafe and boutique shopping neighborhood with an expat-heavy, bohemian vibe. Safe and residential, less touristy than central KL. Good for settling in and experiencing local cafe culture, though pricier than other areas.
