Floriana

Floriana is a residential area next to Valletta with budget accommodation and local atmosphere, but limited dining and nightlife and higher crime rates than other areas.

Floriana is right outside Valletta's gates - a 10-minute walk from City Gate - but it's completely different. This is a working-class residential area with offices, local shops, and apartment buildings instead of baroque palaces. You won't see many tourists here, which means local atmosphere but less tourist infrastructure. People speak English but the area doesn't cater to visitors like Valletta does. The main thing here is the Granaries, a big open space that hosts concerts and events. Public transport is good since many buses pass through on the way to Valletta. Accommodation is mostly cheaper Airbnbs in residential buildings rather than hotels. During the day Floriana feels safe and ordinary - just a regular neighborhood. After dark it gets very quiet since there aren't many restaurants or bars. Government crime reports show Floriana has higher crime than the national average, mostly theft and pickpocketing rather than violent crime. It's a budget option if you want to be near Valletta without tourist prices, but you'll go into Valletta or Sliema for food and nightlife.
