Colonia Americana is the center of contemporary Guadalajara and the most practical base in the city. Avenida Chapultepec, a 1.5km pedestrian-friendly street, runs through the middle, with specialty coffee shops, mezcal bars, cocktail venues, and restaurants all within walking distance of each other. The US Consulate General is at Progreso 175, inside the neighborhood. Streets stay busy and lit late into the night, and that steady foot traffic is a big part of why it feels safe. Eating alone or working from a café is completely ordinary here. Phone theft has been reported on busy stretches of Chapultepec on weekend evenings, so keep your phone in a pocket rather than in your hand.

Chapalita is the quieter, expat-heavy alternative to Colonia Americana. It suits travelers who want a walkable residential base with good cafés and restaurants and don't need late-night bars. It is a 10-minute Uber from Americana when you want more going on.
Zapopan Centro is a historic baroque neighborhood with ordinary local life, a growing bar and café scene, and good art at MACZUL, all reachable for 10 pesos on Line 3. Come for the afternoon, stay for the evening at Salón Candela, and take an Uber home.
