Zapopan Centro is a historic neighborhood built around the baroque Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Zapopan, one of Mexico's major pilgrimage sites. It has cobblestone streets, 18th-century buildings, and a growing set of craft beer bars, coffee shops that play vinyl, and cocktail venues. Unlike Tlaquepaque, it is still mostly local. You'll see Tapatío families on the plaza, retirees feeding pigeons, and artisan vendors rather than tour groups. The neighboring modern part of Zapopan has the MACZUL (Museo de Arte de Zapopan), a contemporary art museum, and the Andares luxury shopping center. Line 3 BRT gets you there from downtown in about 20 minutes for 9.50 MXN, and the trip is worth making.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Chapalita is the quieter, expat-heavy alternative to Colonia Americana. It suits travelers who want a walkable residential base with good cafés and restaurants and don't need late-night bars. It is a 10-minute Uber from Americana when you want more going on.
Providencia is the safest and quietest of the areas most visitors use, and it has some of the best restaurants. Prices are higher than in Colonia Americana and nightlife is calmer, so it suits people who want an easy base more than a busy one.
Colonia Americana is the best base in Guadalajara for most travelers on their own. It is the most walkable and social part of the city, with the most cafés, plenty of bars, and the US Consulate nearby. The street life runs from day into night and feels safe. Take a DiDi home after midnight rather than walking, and keep your phone in your pocket on weekend evenings.
