Mérida, Mexico
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Mérida.
The main historic district with colonial architecture, museums, and restaurants. Safe to walk around day and night. Closes earlier than most city centers but has the most to see and do.
Centro Histórico sits around Plaza Grande and the cathedral. You'll see colonial buildings, narrow cobblestone streets, and old mansions converted to museums and hotels. Days are busy - families, street vendors selling fruit juice and marquesitas, tourists hitting the Gold Museum and Governor's Palace. Tourist Police are visible and some speak English. People eat alone in cafes here - both locals and travelers. Restaurants start closing around 10-11pm, earlier than you'd expect for a city center. Sunday evenings have free concerts that fill the plaza with families. Safety is good with regular foot traffic and police around. Watch your bags at Mercado Lucas de Gálvez where pickpockets work.
