Mérida, Mexico
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Mérida.
Safe residential neighborhood with tree-lined streets and strong community. Quiet and authentic but you'll need transport to Centro for dining and nightlife.
One of the safer, more desirable residential neighborhoods close to downtown and west of Paseo Montejo. Originally part of Hacienda Datil y Limon, developed by Joaquín García Ginerés. Centers on Parque de las Américas, a four-block park with an amphitheater. Saturdays 9am-1pm there's a Slow Food Market. Tree-lined streets with mixed architecture - art deco, colonial, European, modern. Residential area where you'll see locals walking dogs, jogging late at night. Has 24/7 surveillance and community safety programs. Supermarkets, schools, healthcare nearby. Quieter with fewer tourist restaurants than Centro. Shows how middle and upper-middle class locals live. Less English spoken than tourist areas - good for Spanish practice. Peaceful and safe but you'll need taxis or rideshares to Centro for most dining and nightlife.
