Mérida, Mexico
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Mérida.
Artistic neighborhood with late nightlife at Salón Gallos and university atmosphere. Less polished than other Centro areas but good for alternative scene.
Artsy neighborhood in Centro with bohemian vibe, centered on Parque de La Mejorada. Main spot is Salón Gallos - converted oat mill with industrial/speakeasy feel. Has Cantina Gallos (Lebanese-Yucatecan fusion, craft cocktails), wine bar (Mexican wines), gallery space, arthouse cinema. Open until 2am daily - one of the few late-night spots in Mérida. Faculty of Architecture UADY is in a historically significant building here. Draws younger artistic crowd - students, creatives, expats into alternative scenes. Less polished than Santa Ana or Santiago. Eating and drinking alone is normal, especially at Salón Gallos where the communal setup makes it easy to talk to people. Safe with university foot traffic but less pristine than main Centro. English less common than in tourist areas.
