Mérida, Mexico
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Mérida.
Grand boulevard with architecture, museums, and upscale dining. Safe, international atmosphere. Good for strolling and museum visits.
The grand boulevard modeled after Paris's Champs-Élysées, built 1888-1904 during the henequén boom. Runs 1.6 kilometers from the Remate (near Santa Ana) north to Monumento a la Patria. Lined with French-style mansions, museums (Casa Museo Montes Molina, Palacio Cantón), boutique hotels, galleries, cafes. The most recognizable street in Mérida. Marago Coffee draws expats, Cafetería Impala has been around since 1958. Rosas & Xocolate is a boutique hotel/restaurant for nicer meals. Well-lit with hotel security and police patrols. Eating alone is normal at the upscale places. Sundays 8am-12pm one lane closes for La Biciruta - cyclists and pedestrians during Mérida en Domingo. More international/sophisticated atmosphere than local Yucatecan. English is common at hotels, restaurants, cafes. Better for strolling, museums, and dining than as a place to stay.
