Mérida, Mexico
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Mérida.
Historic area with Mercado 60 nightlife, Thursday cultural events, and Corredor Gastronómico restaurant strip. Social atmosphere.
One of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, centered on Parque de Santa Lucía. The park hosts the Yucatecan Serenade every Thursday at 9pm - live music and local history since 1965, draws families and couples. One block north is Mercado 60 - nine food vendors, three bars, two stages with live music nightly. Calle 47 (Corredor Gastronómico) starts here and runs through Santa Ana, lined with restaurants, cafes, bars, specialty shops. Bengala Kaffeehaus near the park has regional beans, sandwiches, pastries. Mix of restored colonial homes and local businesses. Less polished than Santa Ana. Eating alone is normal, especially at Mercado 60 where communal tables make it easy to talk to people. Safe day and night with families around and decent street lighting. Police are visible but not everywhere. Most places wind down 10-11pm except Mercado 60 which stays busy later.
