Details

Santiago is one of the nicer central neighborhoods - upscale and photogenic. The church dates to 1637. Close to Plaza Grande but feels less touristy and more local. Tree-lined streets, well-kept colonial houses. Parque de Santiago has a covered market - La Lupita was featured on Netflix's Salt Fat Heat and locals fill it for breakfast and lunch. The market also has Taquería y Marisquería Tetiz with good ceviche and queso empanadas. Coffee scene is strong: Manifesto Casa Tostadora Calabrese roasts Mexican beans on-site, Galeron Club de Cafe is hidden behind what looks like a closed building but opens to a courtyard with jazz. Placer & Delirio makes chocolate using 19th century Yucatan recipes, served in an old mansion's courtyard. The area draws young professionals and families more than backpackers. Safe for walking anytime with decent lighting and police patrols. Quiets down around 10-11pm like everywhere else.
