Details

La Merced is this massive traditional market that sprawls across like 10 city blocks. During the day, it's packed with families buying everything from chilies to live chickens, so there's safety in numbers. Market police patrol the main areas, but stick to the central corridors and don't wander to the outer edges. The thing is, this place completely transforms after dark. Once the legitimate vendors pack up around 7 PM, sketchy people take over the empty stalls and the whole area gets dangerous fast. The metro station gets particularly bad at night - lots of muggings reported. If you want to see an authentic Mexican market, come during busy day hours and don't stick around for sunset.
