Details

Centro Histórico is the main tourist area, centered around the Zócalo plaza where mariachi bands play at night and locals hang out during the day. The pedestrian streets around Calle Macedonio Alcalá have constant foot traffic and police around during daylight. Most museums, colonial churches, and traditional markets are within 10 minutes of the Zócalo. The area stays busy until around 10pm with lit streets, performers, and outdoor restaurants. After 10pm things change fast - crowds disappear and even locals taxi everywhere. Being in the tourist center means higher prices and vendors approaching you constantly, but it's convenient and has the safest evening hours.
