Details

Jalatlaco has street art on nearly every wall and attracts artists and creatives. Named Mexico's first Barrio Mágico in 2023, it's residential but welcoming to outsiders. Colonial houses belong to families who've lived here for generations, but there are also hipster coffee shops and newer restaurants. It's quiet and you can walk to Centro in 10-15 minutes. Cafes have plenty of people working on laptops or reading. Time Out ranked it one of the world's coolest neighborhoods in 2019, which brought more tourists, though it still feels fairly local. Same safety rule as everywhere in Oaxaca - don't walk alone after dark. During the day and early evening it feels peaceful, with families out and locals around.
