Oaxaca, Mexico
Xochimilco feels like a village with authentic residential life and good breakfast places. Further from Centro but worth it if you want local experience.
Xochimilco is Oaxaca's oldest neighborhood and feels like a village within the city. North of Santo Domingo across Highway 190, it's residential with textile workshops, family restaurants, and locals going about daily life. A lot of American expats live here. The cobblestone streets are hilly and colorful, lined with houses where artisans make textiles you can watch. The neighborhood has some excellent breakfast spots without Centro's crowds or need for reservations. You'll see far fewer tourists than Centro or Jalatlaco - more authentic daily life. Families walk around in the evenings and there's a community-watch feel. It's quiet at night because it's residential, not commercial. About a 20-minute walk or quick taxi from the Zócalo, which many people prefer.
