5 de Diciembre is a quiet, cheaper residential area close to Centro. It is easygoing by day and empty at night, so plan on a car for evening trips.
Just north of Centro, 5 de Diciembre sits between the old town and the Hotel Zone. It is mainly residential, with local restaurants, small cafes and quiet streets a block back from the water, and the seafront path leads to the Malecón. Residents are mostly Mexican, with some longer-stay visitors, and prices are lower than in the Zona Romántica. It is easy to explore on foot in the daytime, and cafes with vegetarian and vegan menus are common. At night there is less foot traffic, so take a taxi or ride-hailing car for anything beyond the main streets. English is less common than in the Old Town.

Versalles is a quiet residential area with good cafes and restaurants and fewer tourists. It works best for daytime visits and early dinners, with a ride home at night.
The Zona Romántica is the most convenient and social area for a woman on her own, with walkable streets, plenty of food options and a busy evening scene. Expect street selling and nightlife noise, and be careful with drinks and with late-night routes uphill.
Centro and the Malecón have the old town streets, the seafront walk and busy evenings. The main streets are safe and crowded, the uphill streets are quiet after dark, and street sellers are constant.
