Summary

The Zona Romántica is the most convenient and social area for a woman on her own, with walkable streets, plenty of food options and a busy evening scene. Expect street selling and nightlife noise, and be careful with drinks and with late-night routes uphill.

Details

The Zona Romántica, also called Old Town or Emiliano Zapata, is where most solo travelers stay. It is south of the Cuale River around Playa Los Muertos and its pier, with small hotels, cafes, taco stands, rooftop bars and independent shops. Streets are walkable, lit and busy until late, and the crowd is a mix of Mexican families, long-stay foreigners, backpackers and a large LGBTQ+ community, so a woman on her own rarely stands out. Eating alone is normal and staff in most places speak English. The main annoyances are beach vendors, timeshare sellers and the occasional street offer of drugs, which a firm 'no, gracias' usually ends. Nightlife around Olas Altas and the pier runs into the early hours, so watch your drinks and take a taxi home late, especially if you are staying up the hillside streets.
