Kotor, Montenegro
Someone grabs your arm. A taxi goes off-route. A guy won't leave you alone. This free guide covers what to say and do.
Traditional village across the bay with authentic local life, waterfront views, and budget accommodation. Very safe and quiet but limited English, dining, and transport options.
Across the bay from Kotor, Muo is a small traditional village with stone houses, family-run guesthouses, and local bakeries where grandmothers make fresh bread each morning. Views across the water to Kotor's fortress walls are unobstructed from the waterfront. You'll hear roosters in the morning, see fishing boats heading out at dawn, and watch locals gathering at small shops to chat. English is limited since this is genuinely off the tourist path - bring basic phrases or a translation app. The walk or bike ride into Kotor takes 15-35 minutes depending on where you're staying, and there's no regular public transport. You'll need to arrange taxis or be comfortable walking. Guesthouses and apartments are budget-friendly and many have terraces with bay views. It's very safe - the kind of place where locals leave doors unlocked and kids play in the streets unsupervised. Works well if you want traditional village life while staying close enough to reach Kotor's restaurants and attractions. The trade-off is limited dining in Muo itself and needing to arrange transport back from Old Town if you're out late.
