Tangier, Morocco
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Tangier.
Beachfront promenade with marina, restaurants, and nightlife. Well-lit and safe for evening walks with police around, but tourist prices are high and pickpocketing happens.
The Corniche runs along the Mediterranean beachfront - a palm tree-lined promenade from the port to the upscale Malabata area. During the day locals and tourists walk the waterfront, kids play on the beach, vendors sell seafood and snacks. The new marina has brought modern restaurants, licensed bars, and beach clubs that stay open until 4am. Police patrol regularly and it's well-lit at night, so it's one of the safer areas to walk after dark. The Malabata section has luxury hotels, modern apartments, and pricier restaurants aimed at wealthy Moroccans and international visitors. Bar Terminus near the port has views across to Spain, El Tangerino does seafood paella by the water. The crowd is more mixed than the medina - Moroccan families, European tourists, expats. You can walk the promenade comfortably during the day and early evening. The main issue is tourist pricing - beachfront cafes want 60-100 dirhams for breakfast when local places charge 25. Pickpocketing happens near the beach and in crowds, so watch your stuff. After midnight stick to the main promenade instead of isolated beach areas.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
The modern European part of town with cafes, international restaurants, and good lighting. Safer and more convenient than the medina but less authentic.
Main square between the medina and Ville Nouvelle. Good for orientation but has persistent hustlers offering tours. Better as a transit point than a place to linger.
The upscale part of the old city with better restaurants, Gibraltar views, and fixed-up riads. Feels safer and more polished than the medina below, though you should still skip the exterior walls after dark.
