Don't Make These 5 Mistakes in Maputo

What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Maputo.

Summary

Historic downtown with colonial architecture and markets. High crime makes it daytime-only. Visit with a guide, hide valuables, leave before sunset.

Details

Baixa is the historic downtown with the CFM Railway Station (designed by Eiffel's associates) and the 1901 Central Market. During the day it's busy with street vendors, shoppers at the Municipal Market, and office workers. This is where you see real Maputo street life instead of the international atmosphere upscale. Timing matters a lot here - once evening comes, vendors pack up, office workers leave, and the streets empty fast. Crime rates are high after dark and locals avoid it at night. Visit mid-morning through late afternoon for the markets and architecture, then get out before sunset.
