Don't Make These 5 Mistakes in Windhoek

What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Windhoek.

Summary

Klein Windhoek has the most restaurants, cafes, and accommodation in the city - upscale, safe, and English-friendly. Pricier than local areas, but that's where the tourist infrastructure is.

Details

Klein Windhoek sits on slopes with views across the city. This is where most tourists stay - it has the highest concentration of guesthouses, restaurants, and cafes, mainly along Sam Nujoma Drive and Nelson Mandela Avenue. The area attracts expats, diplomats, and international visitors, so eating alone doesn't make you stand out. Staff speak good English since they're used to foreign customers. The neighborhood stays active until 11pm or so with people heading to dinner at Joe's Beerhouse or The Stellenbosch Wine Bar. Street lighting is decent and you'll see private security at many places. Police patrol regularly because of nearby embassies. The vibe is upscale and relaxed rather than party-oriented - more professionals and older travelers than backpackers. Walking around during the day is fine. After 10pm, stick to main roads and take LEFA or a taxi home instead of walking side streets. Everything costs more here than in local neighborhoods, but that's the trade-off for the location and safety.
