For women traveling alone, this is the easiest place to stay in Leiden. Everything's within walking distance, the streets are well lit, and there are people around at most hours. The canal terraces are worth making time for. Breestraat gets rowdy late on weekend nights, but that's about it.
Most visitors stay in the old center, and it's the obvious choice. Narrow streets spread out from the Burcht, a fortress on a small hill, with independent shops, brown cafés, and restaurants along the canals. Breestraat is the main shopping street, and the Aalmarkt area has a market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. On a sunny day, the terraces along the Nieuwe Rijn canal fill up quickly. The streets around the Pieterskerk are quiet and feel more like a village than a city. The area is well lit, police are around, and students and locals are out at most hours. The one catch is Friday and Saturday nights after midnight, when the clubs close and Breestraat gets loud and messy - it's not dangerous, just unpleasant if you're trying to get home or sleep.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Leiden's museum and university district, with the city's best-known canal. It's safe at any hour, though some parts of Rapenburg are very empty late at night. Good for museums and slow afternoons in cafés - Café Barrera in particular is a local fixture.
Staying by the station makes sense if you're catching early trains or doing lots of day trips. Beyond that, the area gets residential and there's little to see. Most people only come here for the station, the Ibis, or Naturalis, and spend the rest of their time further south.
A residential area with nothing for visitors. It's safe enough by Dutch standards, but it's the least comfortable part of Leiden and there's no reason to stay or spend time here. The historic center is a much better choice.
