Auckland, New Zealand
Auckland's CBD has shopping on Queen Street and restaurants in Britomart, plus all the transport connections. Safe during business hours, less so on Queen Street after dark. Central location makes it convenient.
The CBD centers on Queen Street for shopping, with Britomart at the bottom becoming the main dining area. Britomart's nine heritage blocks have restaurants like Ortolana, kingi, and Cafe Hanoi. It's also the main transport hub where trains, buses, and ferries connect at Britomart Station. During the day it's busy with office workers, shoppers, and tourists. Queen Street empties out at night and feels less safe after 10pm - take a taxi if you're out late. Britomart stays busier because of the restaurants and bars. Solo dining is normal - business travelers and locals eat alone regularly. Police presence is good, but watch for pickpockets in crowded shopping areas. Everything's flat and walkable.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Shopping area with 200+ stores and rooftop restaurants. Safe when busy, empties at night. Functional for retail, not much else. No neighborhood feel.
Ponsonby has Auckland's highest concentration of restaurants and cafes. Prices are high but food quality is solid. Safe streets with good foot traffic day and night. Mix of upscale and bohemian atmosphere.
Auckland's waterfront dining and nightlife area with marina views. Feels safe due to foot traffic and lighting. Tourist prices but that comes with the territory. More sophisticated than a club scene.
