Auckland, New Zealand
Shopping area with 200+ stores and rooftop restaurants. Safe when busy, empties at night. Functional for retail, not much else. No neighborhood feel.
Newmarket has over 200 stores (Zara, H&M, David Jones) centered on Westfield Newmarket. Mainly a daytime shopping area, though restaurants have grown around Broadway and on Westfield's rooftop - Korean at The Candy Shop, laksa at Selera. You get 2 hours free parking, connects by bus and train. The atmosphere is commercial, not neighborhood - you come here for a reason, not to wander. Solo dining works fine since people shop alone and need lunch. Safe during shopping hours with crowds around, but empties out at night when stores close. It's practical for shopping and eating, not particularly interesting otherwise.

Auckland's CBD has shopping on Queen Street and restaurants in Britomart, plus all the transport connections. Safe during business hours, less so on Queen Street after dark. Central location makes it convenient.
Ponsonby has Auckland's highest concentration of restaurants and cafes. Prices are high but food quality is solid. Safe streets with good foot traffic day and night. Mix of upscale and bohemian atmosphere.
Auckland's waterfront dining and nightlife area with marina views. Feels safe due to foot traffic and lighting. Tourist prices but that comes with the territory. More sophisticated than a club scene.
