Granada, Nicaragua
Residential neighborhood with real local life and cheap prices. Works if you're fine with no English and taxiing to tourist areas for meals and evenings.
El Carmen is a residential neighborhood where you'll see actual daily Nicaraguan life instead of tourists. Families doing their thing, corner stores (pulperías), Spanish everywhere. It's quiet, which appeals to some people who want peace and don't need to be in the center. Local restaurants serve traditional Nicaraguan food for way less than tourist areas, but menus are in Spanish and staff don't speak English. Safe during the day with that neighborhood feel where people know each other. After dark, streets empty as everyone goes inside, and lighting's spotty compared to the historic center. You'll taxi to La Calzada or Parque Central for evenings, not walk through quiet residential streets. El Carmen works if you want authentic local life on a budget and you're fine with limited English, but you'll spend time and taxi fares getting to tourist areas for dining and nightlife.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Granada's tourist strip and safest area at night, with international restaurants, bars, and cafes on a pedestrian street. Good if you want safety and English-speaking staff more than local authenticity.
Centro Histórico has the main plaza, colonial architecture, and museums. Safe during the day with police around, good for cafe culture, but watch your stuff in markets and take taxis after dark.
Worth a daytime visit for Las Isletas boat tours and photos, but the isolated stretches and rundown state make it unsafe to walk after dark. Taxi to and from at night.
