León, Nicaragua
Someone grabs your arm. A taxi goes off-route. A guy won't leave you alone. This free guide covers what to say and do.
León's main cultural area with colonial architecture and museums. Good police presence during the day. Solo dining at plaza cafes is normal, though street harassment happens. After sunset take taxis even for short distances - the area empties out and becomes unsafe.
This is where you'll spend most of your time - the massive cathedral dominates the plaza, surrounded by colonial buildings with museums, cafes, and restaurants. During the day the cobblestone streets stay busy with locals, university students, and tourists. Tourist Police are visible around Central Park and the cathedral. Women eat alone at cafes overlooking the plaza, working on laptops or reading. Most restaurants and tour offices have at least basic English since they serve international visitors. The Museum of the Revolution and Museo de Arte Fundación Ortiz-Gurdián are within 10 minutes walk. But timing matters. Once the sun sets around 6pm, locals go home fast and tourists head back to hostels. Streets that felt fine at 5pm are poorly lit and nearly empty by 8pm. Even right in the center, don't walk alone after dark. The whole area goes from busy cultural center during the day to quiet and risky at night.
