León, Nicaragua
Someone grabs your arm. A taxi goes off-route. A guy won't leave you alone. This free guide covers what to say and do.
Indigenous neighborhood with León's oldest church and street murals showing local history. Worth a daytime visit by taxi but feels isolated from tourist areas. Almost no English spoken. Unsafe after dark.
Sutiava is the indigenous neighborhood that predates the Spanish - the Sutiava tribe lived here before León was founded. Dirt roads replace the Centro's cobblestones and the pace slows way down. The San Juan Bautista de Sutiava Church, built from timber in the 1500s, is León's oldest. Large murals painted by local teenagers cover walls throughout the area, showing Sutiava's history and culture. The Museo Adiáct in the Casa Cultural has indigenous heritage displays, though you might need to ask staff to open it. During the day you'll see families going about normal life - more authentic than the polished Centro. The neighborhood celebrates the Virgin of Guadalupe December 10-12 with decorations and festivities. But Sutiava is 15-20 minutes walk from the cathedral, or a short taxi ride for 20 córdobas. Almost no one speaks English and it feels cut off from the tourist area. After dark it gets quiet and poorly lit. Even León locals say take a taxi here rather than walk, especially if you don't know the area.
