Lagos, Nigeria
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Lagos.
Safest mainland neighborhood with heavy police presence from government facilities. Quiet, residential, and near the airport with good restaurants at lower prices than the islands. Best mainland option on a budget.
Ikeja GRA (Government Reserved Area) is the mainland's safest neighborhood, where government officials, professionals, and wealthy Lagosians live in tree-lined streets with nice houses. Lagos State Police Command headquarters and Area F Police Station are here, creating constant security with armed personnel. While not a gated community, the resident class and government presence make it one of the few mainland areas that feels reasonably safe. Streets around Joel Ogunnaike and Isaac John have restaurants, cafes, and lounges serving everything from Nigerian home cooking at The Place to budget meals under 20,000 NGN at Yellow Chilli and 12 Inch Baguette. Lagos Marriott Hotel is here, 15 minutes from Murtala Muhammed Airport. The area is calm with less traffic than the rest of Lagos, and streets are quiet morning and evening except commercial zones. English is widely spoken in restaurants and hotels. The trade-off is isolation from Lagos's energy and nightlife - you'll need to Uber to Victoria Island or Lekki for evening entertainment. But as a safe, affordable mainland base near the airport, it works well if you want lower costs than the islands.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
VI has the best security in Lagos with heavy embassy and corporate presence. It's expensive and westernized, but has the best infrastructure and dining options in the city.
Lagos's wealthiest neighborhood with heavy security, high-end dining, and large expat community. Quieter than Victoria Island with less nightlife, but very safe if you can afford the premium prices.
Beach area with modern development and gated communities. Lekki Phase 1 is relatively safe during the day, but night security is moderate and gets worse as you move east. Better for daytime visits than as a main base.
