Lagos, Nigeria
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Lagos.
Historic commercial center with markets and authentic street life, but severe harassment, poor night safety, and chaotic conditions. Brief daytime visits with local guides only.
Lagos Island is the historic commercial center where colonial-era Brazilian architecture meets chaotic markets, banking headquarters, and millions of people moving through every day. Balogun Market sells fabrics and spices, street food vendors sell suya and akara, and you get the authentic pulse of Lagos commerce. During business hours, the island is packed with office workers, market vendors, and trading activity. Lagos Island changes dramatically depending on time and location. The business district around Marina has some security during the day, but markets like Balogun and Oyingbo have serious harassment issues - aggressive catcalling, unwanted touching, and unsafe conditions. Street food here looks good but hygiene is questionable, with vendors near refuse collection points. After business hours around 6-7pm, the island empties fast as workers go home, leaving poor lighting and increased crime risk. Traffic here is legendary. Unless you're specifically interested in markets and have a local guide, don't spend time here.
