Lagos, Nigeria
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Lagos.
Tech startup hub with authentic mainland energy and cheap food. Serious harassment issues, poor night safety, and extreme traffic make it unsuitable as a base. Daytime visits only from safer accommodations.
Yaba is Lagos mainland's tech hub, nicknamed 'Yabacon Valley' for its startups, co-working spaces, and young entrepreneurs. University of Lagos is here, creating a student and young professional demographic around tech companies like Andela and CC-Hub. The vibe is authentic Lagos - busy markets, street food vendors, local restaurants with huge portions for cheap, and chaotic energy you don't find in sanitized Victoria Island. During the day, Yaba is active and feels relatively safe around the university and tech centers. E-Centre entertainment hub has cinemas, restaurants, and game centers. But harassment is a serious problem in Yaba markets, traffic is extreme, and safety drops dramatically after dark. The mainland feels fundamentally different from the islands - more crowded, less security, poorer lighting, and foreigners stand out. English is spoken by the educated crowd around tech spaces, but you'll need basic Pidgin for markets. If you want authentic Lagos on a tight budget, Yaba works for daytime visits from a base in VI or Ikoyi. Don't stay here overnight and leave well before evening.

Beach area with modern development and gated communities. Lekki Phase 1 is relatively safe during the day, but night security is moderate and gets worse as you move east. Better for daytime visits than as a main base.
VI has the best security in Lagos with heavy embassy and corporate presence. It's expensive and westernized, but has the best infrastructure and dining options in the city.
Lagos's wealthiest neighborhood with heavy security, high-end dining, and large expat community. Quieter than Victoria Island with less nightlife, but very safe if you can afford the premium prices.
