Skopje, North Macedonia
The city center is the most tourist-friendly area with restaurants, cafes, and good lighting at night. Central location but watch for pickpockets in crowded spots.
Macedonia Square has the massive Alexander the Great statue and neoclassical government buildings from the 2014 renovation project. The Stone Bridge connects to the Old Bazaar. During the day it's crowded with tourists taking photos, locals at outdoor cafes, and vendors selling grilled corn. The area stays busy and well-lit until around 11 PM, especially the pedestrian zone and waterfront along the Vardar River. Restaurant staff speak English. Police are visible around the main attractions. Watch your bag in crowded spots - pickpockets work Macedonia Square and the Stone Bridge during tourist season. It's touristy rather than authentic, but the central location is convenient if you want everything walkable.
